[Jen Pumo] layers imagistic lyrics over atmospheric soundscapes well worth exploring. Her performances are unfailingly compelling, even though she seldom raises her voice.
—Michael Roberts, Westword
My name is Jen Pumo. I compose and perform contemplative downtempo adult music. My current writing centers around subjective piano, textural soundscapes and mostly handmade beats. The music I make is born from the nature-nurture collision of my life.
Raised in kaleidoscopic Miami, the multicultural palette was loaded with varying inspirations and confusions. I decided to work out some of my questions and worldview more intensely as a philosophy major in college. I studied esoteric anatomy, harmonic medicine, martial arts, the stars, the earth. Natural beauty offers me a sanctuary from which to create. I was drawn to Colorado- now my home since 2004.
My music has it's center in piano. Ever since I first sat down at one as a little girl, I felt home- reliably so. Although I play guitar and some world percussion, piano is home. I need to hear the notes, to allow the sounds to generate a sensical picture of my inner experience. Making music let's me see the inside. I expand my compositions to convey moods and themes that inspire me into deeply sensual, sometimes ethereal and allegorical spaces. I want to live in a world that is wise, intuitive, strong of heart and wildly beautiful. I suppose I attempt to create that world by partnering with sound.
I met my writing partner, Graham Pearce, under some blinking lucky mountain stars in 2005 and we almost immediately began our collaboration. Our merger activated what had remained latent in me as an artist- the motivation to give a literate structure to mood. His melodic sensibility, his drive, and his philosophic intellect melds with my expressionistic piano style, my desire for lyrical dialoging and my humility in service of the muse. Our process is intuitive and methodical. I am a more patient artist through our synergy.
Our first album, All Over the Moon, released in late 2007, has met with very positive acclaim. It was chosen as one of the best of the year among local releases by Westword magazine, who also recognized me as the 2008 Best Purveyor of Electro-pop.
Inspired by the beauty, mystery and rich cultural tradition of Tibet and her people, and in order to voice our desire for Tibet's liberation, Graham and I composed "Silent Message." In a continuing supportive effort we have written "So Far" as part of a soundtrack for When the Dragon Swallowed the Sun, a documenatry on the younger generation in the Tibetan community in exile and their struggle to free their homeland. Directed by the talented and passionate filmmaker and educator, Dirk Simon, this film also features music from Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and Phillip Glass. To be in such company is humbling.
Currently, we are in the studio breathing life into our next album, exploring the byways of personal shamanic revelation and communal connection in an age of emerging global consciousness. Set to bloom in Fall 2010.
